Two years ago, I made a difficult decision in leaving Long Island for a new life in New Jersey. Levittown had been my home for over 24 years, but getting married to a "Jersey girl" changed my life forever. Fortunately, my new home has not changed my affection for my hometown nor my interest and enjoyment in Long Island sports. Long Island Sports Report is not only dedicated to Long Islanders living on Long Island, but for those "transplanted" Long Islanders who want to reconnect with their home turf through their passion for local, hometown sports.
My love of local sports was first kindled as a student of Division Avenue High School. During my high school years, the Blue Dragons were New York State Champions in Varsity Baseball (under legendary coach Doug Robins) and champions of the New York State Rutgers Cup in Varsity Football amongst many other titles in boy's wrestling and boy's and girl's bowling, girl's soccer, and girl's volleyball. Staying local for college, as a student at Hofstra University, I was fortunate to watch the Men's Basketball team, under the leadership of Jay Wright, win multiple conference championships and two NCAA tournament berths. I found that local sports were just as thrilling as watching the "big-leaguers".
My background is varied, from retail sales to banking to marketing, but I have always found time to pursue my love of writing. Over the years, I have written content for dozens of websites, blogs, and e-zines. With the creation of Long Island Sports Report, I look forward to combining my love of writing with my passion for sports. My team is made up of reporters on the ground, who are equally as passionate for Long Island sports and are motivated to write stories that will interest and inspire.
Andrew Coen Senior Editor
Growing up in Greenwich, Rhode Island, I was a close follower of local college sports, following Providence College, the University of Rhode Island, and Brown. That all changed over 10 years ago when I entered my freshman year at Hofstra. I immediately bled "Blue and Gold" and grabbed at the opportunity to serve on my college radio station, 88.7FM, where I performed play-by-play and color commentary for Hofstra sports.
After receiving a journalism degree from Hoftra, I served as a reporter for the Nassau Herald from 2003 to 2007, covering the Lawrence and Hewlett-Woodmere school districts and taking any chance I could to write sports features. Now, after stints as a financial reporter at Institutional Investor News and Crain's Investment News, I am once again focused on sports writing and reporting. I have worked in various media capacities for NCAASports.com, WNYG 1440AM, Laxunited.com and Molloy College and now serve as Editor of Hofstra's sports blog, "Inside the Pride" (http://gohofstra.blogspot.com) and Senior Editor for the Long Island Sports Report.
